The work we do really improves the wellbeing of pets and owners.
For many older and vulnerable people their pets are an important part of their life. Founded in 2012, Keep Your Pet is an Age UK York service which aims to help people in the greater York area to look after their pets during times of ill health or other difficulties. Our support services are free and are provided by volunteers who have all had relevant training, including a DBS and a home assessment for fosters. We ask pet owners to pay for things like pet food, equipment and veterinary treatment.
Our volunteers can provide help with
Dog walking
Visiting to feed an animal
Taking an animal to the vet
Short term (and sometimes longer-term) fostering for dogs
Collecting pet food and medications
Advice and signposting to other AUKY services or other organisations
We need volunteers to help to provide practical support and with fundraising and publicity. Click here for details of what is involved and how to find out about our current vacancies. (Click here to go to Volunteering)
Pet owners
We aim to offer help as quickly as possible, but we are not an emergency service and encourage owners to talk to us before they need help so that they have the reassurance of knowing what support we can provide. Animals need to be registered with us before we can provide help, so if you or someone you know might benefit from help in the future, please contact us for an informal chat (click here to go to help for Pet Owners)
We need people to make a donation to help us continue and expand our work. (Click here to go to How to Donate)
